FACIAL WRINKLES

Your face uses various muscles to create expressions, mostly either smiling or  frowning.

In the process of smiling, the eye wrinkles are more noticeable.  The frowning process causes the vertical lines between the eyebrows to be prominent.

As you age the skin ceases to spring back to its original position and these wrinkles (known as dynamic wrinkles) continue to be noticeable on the skin to form what are known as static wrinkles.  During the ageing process you lose skin tone and the wrinkles stay on the face when you are not forming a facial expression.

With aging, natural collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin decrease and the skin volume and structure have less ability to return to the previous position after the smile or frown.  This results in static wrinkles and folded skin forms.

Collagen is the main structural protein of your skin and one of the main structural proteins of your body.  Collagen provides strength and elastic fibres provide the ability to stretch and recoil which is the basis of elasticity.  As you age your skin sags due to the damage from the sun and the skin color loses that pink look.

 Eye Wrinkles/Crows Feet

Crows Feet wrinkles are amongst the earliest of wrinkles to be noticeable and have a profound effect on the allusion to youth and beauty.

The effects of gravity on the muscle actions around the eyes caused by thinning of the skin due to volume loss and of course the effects of damage from smoking and sun exposure, all contribute to the development of eye wrinkles and crow's feet.

Crows feet around the eyes are caused by repeated motions of squinting.

  Forehead Wrinkles

Forehead wrinkles (creases) are formed by the contributing effects of smoking and sun exposure.

The effects of free radicals produced by cigarette smoke is a major cause of premature wrinkles.  Free radicals play havoc with the skin, damaging it to an alarming extent.

Overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight is known as photoageing.  Skin becomes dry and leathery in appearance.

  Frown Lines

Frown line wrinkles are caused by the repeated motions of frowning over time and the skin losing its elasticity to recover to its normal position.

These frown lines affect several muscles but are most obvious with the skin folds between the eyebrows.

After making the same expressions time after time, our skin ”remembers“ these creases even when they are not there.

Thinning of the skin, smoking and sun overexposure each contribute to this result.

  Lip Wrinkles

Sometimes referred to as ”smokers lines“.  Wrinkles surrounding the mouth and lips can be some of the most frustrating for the owner and unsightly for the observer of the wrinkles.

When we are speaking often people will watch our mouth and if you are self conscious it can cause concern.

  Marionette Lines

The reason your face takes on a aged appearance is from volume loss of the skin as you get less young and sagging of the skin because of gravity.

In some areas of your face the skin is attached to deeper structures with fibrous connections.

Marionette lines develop from folding of the skin around the fibrous attachments in the mouth and chin area.

These lines below the mouth are called Marionette Lines because they resemble the lines which allow a marionette or puppet mouth to open and close.

These are an early sign of facial aging and as they develop create jowls and loose skin along the jaw line.

   Nasolabial Folds

Nose to mouth lines or folds are one of the earliest signs of facial ageing that make you feel that your face no longer looks young.  These usually start to become prominent after age thirty.

Smiling makes these lines look deeper and as you age the cheek skin falls down to create a fold creating a tired look to the face.

Repeated smiling and facial expression deepen this line throughout life.
